Sputum
To obtain a proper sputum specimen, it is recommended that a series (3-5) of early morning deep cough specimens be collected in a sputum container. The specimen should be kept refrigerated and sent to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection, preferably within (2) two hours.
Sputum containers and instructions are provided by Pathology Laboratories for physician distribution to patients. Please call our Supply Department for these containers.
As an alternative, sputum may be added to the Cytolyt® Fixative in the non-gyn specimen cup, which is available from our Supply Department.
