Pathology Laboratories provides 24 hour turn around time on most surgical specimens due to our unique technical capabilities. Routine, as well as advanced histology techniques including immunofluorescence procedures, immunohistochemical procedures and flow cytometry are available. Bone marrow collection kits are also available.

Biopsy specimens must be submitted in tissue fixative. Various sizes of prefilled tissue containers, along with Surgical Pathology Requisitions, may be obtained from our Supply Department. Tissue containers have bright orange lid labels for easy identification. Prostate biopsy kits may also be obtained which provide eight or twelve prelabeled specimen containers for designated sites.

NOTE: ALWAYS USE SEPARATE CONTAINERS FOR EACH SPECIMEN.  EACH CONTAINER MUST BE LABELED WITH THE PATIENT'S FULL NAME (FIRST AND LAST), DATE OF BIRTH AND SPECIMEN SITE.

For small specimens, particularly those of gynecological types (e.g., endocervical curettings), please use a Telfa-type sponge as a carrier, never a paper towel, napkin or similar material. If a specimen is so minute or of a quality where a sponge is not appropriate, immersion of the curet with adherent mucus directly into the fixative followed by shaking will allow us to make a cell block preparation.

It is imperative that proper patient information be submitted with each specimen.

The following information should be included on the Surgical Pathology Requisition:

  • Specimen Site
  • Date and Time of Collection
  • Patient's First and Last Names
  • Patient Social Security Number
  • Patient Sex
  • Patient Date of Birth
  • Patient Address
  • Patient Phone Number
  • Test(s) Requested
  • Appropriate ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Code For Each Test
  • Medicare, Medicaid, Other Insurance Information
  • Last Menstrual Period / Hormonal Therapy (Should be indicated when submitting an Endometrial Biopsy or Colposcopic specimen).
