The Maturation Pattern is of limited value with essentially only two patterns reliably determined:
- Atrophy
- High Estrogen Effect
If a maturation pattern is warranted, the sample must be obtained from the upper lateral vaginal wall. Smears from ectocervix and endocervix are not suitable for hormonal evaluation.
